Entry tags:

Tagging y/n?

It occurred to me to wonder whether we might want to tag entries with, say, main ingredients. More selfishly, I'd love to have vegetarian/vegan entries tagged (or perhaps put into memories?). Obviously this has the potential to spiral out of control quite quickly as we all invent our own tags, so that would be a strong incentive not to go that route after all. Thoughts?

ETA: How about [personal profile] annotated_em's suggestion below to set up a (semi-fixed) tag list early on, before we get oodles of omnommy posts, covering
• type of food (appetizer, main dish, etc.)
• dietary restrictions (allergens, vegetarian/vegan, kosher/halal, etc.)
• (broad classes of) primary ingredients (meat, fish, pasta, etc.)

Other current suggestions:
• type of cuisine (Italian, French, etc.)
• cooking questions and • requests for recipes
• cooking tips (this one's a current suggestion insofar as it just occurred to me)

Last I checked, polls weren't working terribly well – tho' perhaps this has changed? – so commenting here is still probably the best way to go, y/n? And then at some point we can figure out what people on balance think would be most useful, she says, vaguely.

I think tagging with main ingredients (fish, vegetable, pasta, that kind of thing) and, hm, special notes? (Italian, vegan, gluten-free, etc.) would be a wonderful idea. Maybe with a sticky/profile-note to please try not to go too crazy with it.

I like this, yes.

I like this idea.

Maybe also tag with type of cuisine... American, Mexican, Filipino, etc?

Perhaps skip main ingredients as that will probably get rather unwieldy in the long run, and simply go with tagging for vegetarian and vegan, respectively? Because those are pretty useful, relevant things to tag and to be thereby be able to search under.

Oh, hm! Yes! Allergens would be good to tag for (or against). I'd actually find that *really useful* -- I make stuff for folks who have allergies so being able to search for gluten-free recipes, as an example, would be really nice.

The big problem I have with that is that some people (myself included) have no idea what constitutes a gluten-free meal. Vegetarian and vegan I think we can handle, as well as chicken, fish, beef, pork and "other" as tags. Past that...

I need to give this some thought.

(On a completely unrelated note, I REALLY need a mod hat icon!)

I'd kinda like it to at least have like... snack or dessert or main course or appetizer as tags. Since I foresee myself wanting to browse through main courses possibly, and not necessarily wanting to look at pages of desserts instead or something? But tagging with ingredients does sound like it might get out of hand.

Also like the idea of at least tagging cuisine style like [personal profile] exor674 said, and allergens/vegetarian/vegan type things.

Sounds highly workable! And yes, having a bit of restriction on the tags sounds necessary.

I agree about this plan--it seems less likely to spin out of control. It would end up with tagging a pasta dish something like "main course, nut-free, vegetarian" which seems pretty reasonable.

Perhaps we could come up with a set of tags we can all agree on now, rather than leaving it up to the ingenuity of the users? I'm thinking of, say, the tag system on [livejournal.com profile] food_porn, which is... comprehensive, but so much so that it's very unwieldy.

It seems like we're interested in a set of tags for type of food (appetizer, entree/main course, dessert, perhaps snack/salad/drink as well?), for specific dietary restrictions (allergens, vegetarian/vegan issues, perhaps halal/kosher and so forth as well?), and then for major ingredients (type of meat? type of vegetable/fruit? type of starch?).

Perhaps a set of tags for recipe-requests and for cooking questions (anyone know what I can do with this mountain of kale? how do I cook an artichoke?) as well?

*puts on mod hat*

As I mentioned above, I'm reluctant to label things past vegetarian and vegan because a lot of people don't know what counts as, say, gluten-free. I do think that tagging main dish, appetizer, snack, dessert would work well.

The two that I'm most interested in are vegetarian/vegan plus type of cuisine.
