Hey guys!

I'm noticing a lot of recipes which are gluten-free springing up lately. I don't know about you, but I know a lot of people whohave celiac or a gluten sensitivity and baking/cooking for them can be hard sometimes.

To this end, I challenge any member of this wonderful community to post a gluten-free recipe. You may want to learn more about a gluten-free diet. Either check out Wikipedia or hit up Google for some interesting results.

For me? Well, I'm going to try these gluten-free upside down peach cupcakes, *especially* because they're cheating with boxed cake mix! With a nice, thick champagne buttercream frosting on top, they're going to be yummmmmm. After a long day working cattle, I think those will hit the spot tomorrow!

OLD THINGY
Ok, so a couple months back I made a post that basically said that everyone who posted an entry tagged with season:autumn would get entered into a FABULOUS CONTEST with FABULOUS PRIZES. Well, ok, 2 months of paid time. Whatever.

Anyway, I decided that today was a good day to crack open the piggy bank and hand out some paid time candy. I selected [personal profile] stultiloquentia because her (his?) recipe made me drool. It was a 3 towel clean up! Congrats, Stultioquentia!

NEW THINGY
Now that we are moving into the "eat and eat and drink and eat some more" phase of the year, I would hazard a guess that at least a few of us are harboring secret dreams of plum pudding with little silver tokens, crown roast with rosemary mint sauce, homemade cranberry sauce that is the perfect combination of sweet and tart... You know, the sorts of foods that make your soul a little lighter and your trousers a little tighter.

I also suspect that more than a few of us will be either hosting or attending a holiday celebration where food will be involved. If you're hosting, please post what you're planning on serving. Add in at least one recipe, but don't feel pressured to add them all (though if you do, I certainly won't complain). If you're not hosting, tell us what your dream menu would be. Don't be shy! 5 courses plus a 2-part hors d'oeuvres remove and 12 kinds of pie for dessert is perfectly reasonable, especially if you're just daydreaming menus. Please tag these entries Menus: winter holiday.

I'm thinking that another 2 months paid time is a reasonable incentive. Please see the previous contest entry for rules and restrictions (it's linked at the top of this entry).

Of course, you are still welcome to post whatever other food-related things you're thinking about as well!

Now that all of that is out of the way, I'm going to go get the mango sauce started for the mango glazed pork chops that my family's having for dinner.

Happy Noming!

For those coming in from the [site community profile] dw_news post, welcome! Please review the information in the community profile for information about how things work around here.

The contest that [staff profile] mark mentioned is detailed here in the second chunk of that post.

I'll be posting my sweet potato souffle (SOO-fle, darn it!) later this week. I got my hands on some sweet potatoes, see....

Happy Noming!

Hey [community profile] omnomnomers! This is Kat here with an announcement and a challenge!

First off, huge thanks to [personal profile] exor674 for providing this comm with another month-and-a-bit of paid time! Her gracious donation will allow all of y'all to use the journal search feature, which is available to all members of paid communities. Thanks, Dre!

Second, I'd like to challenge everyone to post their favorite autumn recipes to this comm. The seasons are changing here in the States and I'm craving fall foods in all their forms: New England pot roast, baked apples, sweet potato souffle*, pumpkin everything. To this end, I would love to see what you eat when the weather starts to cool down.** Post your entry here with the tag "season:autumn" (no space) in addition to the standard complement of tags.

To make things interesting, I will randomly pick a user who participated to receive 2 months of paid time!*** How exciting!

I think that's all I've got for you tonight. Happy OmNomNoming!

-Kat

*I'm a sweet potato fiend and this is my favorite thing out of everything one can do with sweet potatoes. It is second on my "interesting things to do with strange foods" list, right after eggplant fries. YUM.
**If you are in the Southern Hemisphere, feel free to post about what you're craving now that the weather is warming up, OR post about what you'll be wanting in 6 months. I am not a hemispherist!
***No purchase necessary, void where prohibited, must be 18 or the equivalent legal age in your jurisdiction to play, This Is Not A Raffle, if one of the Powers That Be tell me I can't do this I will stop, so on and so forth. If you have a perm account and your name is drawn, you will be able to specify who gets the paid time.

Hey, [personal profile] zarhooie just added me as a co-admin here, and we agreed to open up tagging so that all members could create new tags! Please go wild -- within moderation :) Once we get a fairly complete set of tags, and if they start getting messy and needing a lot of cleanup, we might lock them down again, but that's just a "maybe" at this point.

Hey [community profile] omnomnomers! My name is Kat, and I'll be your mod on your flight today. Please make sure your tray tables are in their full upright position and loosen your lapbelt in preparation for take off.

In all seriousness, hi. I'm Kat, I like food, and I like cooking even more. I'm still kind of like OMG. There are like... 40-some-odd people watching this community and 25 (25!) people with posting access! That's like... crazy. Holy moly.

...I had a point with all this, I swear. I'm a full-time college student and finals are approaching with alarming swiftness. This means that I'm going to be really busy offline, which translates to not having a whole lot of time to tag and stuff on here. That said, here are a few quick things to remember:

1- Be not an asshole. Please don't make me break out my (very very very dusty and somewhat rusted) banhammer. I haven't had to use it in a while. Please don't start flame wars over the best chocolate chip cookie recipe (mostly because mine will trump yours every single time), and we'll be ok.

2- Please clean up after yourself. By this, I mean please tag things appropriately (we'll get to that in a minute), try to keep your formatting reasonable (more on this in a bit too) and keep things safe for work, children and houseplants. This is a community about food porn, but please don't take that too literally!

2.1- Please please please don't post any adverts for other communities here, unless you ask a mod first. Same goes for websites. I'd probably be perfectly happy to have an advert for another food-related community, but less likely to be happy about a HP_ficslash community. Unless it's about the use of food as a character device in the books. Then... maybe.

3- Tags! As of *right now,* please tag things however you see fit. If that involves listing every ingredient, that's ok. If you just want to slap a "vegan, gluten-free" label on there, that's ok too. The two things I ask: Please tag with the type of meal (main dish, appetizer, snack, dessert) and the approximate prep time, rounded to the nearest 15th minute (15 minutes, 26 hours). Past those two things, I'd encourage you to list gluten-free, vegetarian/vegan, nut-free, type of meat and temperature served (cold, hot, warm). Those aren't required. I'm certainly not going to delete anyone's post, but taking these quick steps now will make my job a LOT easier. I'm not going to delete any posts (unless they're horribly off-topic), but I may be convinced to put repeat offenders on moderated status so that I can tag their entries before they go up. Please don't make me do that; it's a lot more work for me.

4- Formatting is pretty simple: Put the title of your dish in the subject line, put a quick description of your dish *above* the cut, and the rest of your dish under the cut. Tag appropriately. If you ganked the recipe from somewhere online, post a link. If you ganked it from a cookbook, a link to the Amazon page or the author's website would be appreciated. If you made it up, tell us so we can congratulate you appropriately!

5- Fifth and final: If you're interested in helping out with moderation 'round here, drop me a PM or e-mail me at zarhooie @ zarhooie.com with OMNOMNOM Mod in the subject line. You can also catch me on #dw, port 6667 at irc.dreamwidth.org as MissKat. I try to be easy to find.

Um... I think that's all. I'm pretty flexible on the tags thing, so if you've got a better system, let me know!

Happy fooding, y'all.

-Kat

[ETA: Because I'm a US-centric lady, I didn't realize that "entree" meant something else in upside down countries. Must be all the blood rushing to their heads or something... anyway, please use main dish instead of entree. Thanks!]

It occurred to me to wonder whether we might want to tag entries with, say, main ingredients. More selfishly, I'd love to have vegetarian/vegan entries tagged (or perhaps put into memories?). Obviously this has the potential to spiral out of control quite quickly as we all invent our own tags, so that would be a strong incentive not to go that route after all. Thoughts?

ETA: How about [personal profile] annotated_em's suggestion below to set up a (semi-fixed) tag list early on, before we get oodles of omnommy posts, covering
• type of food (appetizer, main dish, etc.)
• dietary restrictions (allergens, vegetarian/vegan, kosher/halal, etc.)
• (broad classes of) primary ingredients (meat, fish, pasta, etc.)

Other current suggestions:
• type of cuisine (Italian, French, etc.)
• cooking questions and • requests for recipes
• cooking tips (this one's a current suggestion insofar as it just occurred to me)

Last I checked, polls weren't working terribly well – tho' perhaps this has changed? – so commenting here is still probably the best way to go, y/n? And then at some point we can figure out what people on balance think would be most useful, she says, vaguely.
