Ah, yes, there is nothing quite as gross as old oil. That's one of the reasons I wipe out the pan with a paper towel between each batch, because I think frying in butter, especially, requires a great deal of attention to freshness and a total absence of black crunchy bits in the butter. I can understand being put off by that kind of taste.
