The birthday party went off without a hitch - and the egg-free recipe for the cake was successful (although you'd think by now there would be a way to stop the smaller kids from trying to blow out the candles as you're lighting them).
I should confess that I adapted the hell out of this recipe from an original on recipezaar.com (it was a zuchinni cake)
1 cup margarine, softened (check for eggs or lethicin, and, if in doubt, use butter)
2 ripe bananas, mashed
1/2 cup unsweetened yoghurt
1Tbs golden syrup (Inverted sugar syrup or treacle, I think)
3/4 cup sugar
1tsp baking soda
2 cups flour
2tsp cinnamon
Mix the margarine, bananas, yoghurt and syrup thoroughly (use an electric mixer if you have one). Blend all dry ingredients in another bowl. Add wet ingredients to dry and stire gently, making sure all the corners are mixed. Bake at 350F/180C for approx 35 minutes till a knife comes out clean. Let cool and ice if desired.
I made this nut free (another allergy at the party), but you could stir in nuts or chocolate chips right before baking, I expect.
