My nan and grandad are coming over this week for lunch and I'm not sure what to make them.

My nan likes pasta, chinese food etc, but my grandad is a very meat-potatoes-and-veg type of person.

Ideas?

I do have a slow cooker but it hasn't actually been used yet so I'm wary about using that.

EDIT: Thanks for all the suggestions! A lot of good ideas there. I think I'm gonna make corned beef hash this time.

Here's a suggestion for a menu:

Strips of steak, marinated in something vaguely Asian but inoffensive (soy sauce, garlic, a little bit of ginger), then grilled on skewers.

Oven-roasted potato wedges with whatever herbs you can get away with.
and/or
Good crusty rolls or bread, or else an interesting flatbread like pitas, flour tortillas or naan.

Any suitable "tubular" green vegetable (asparagus, broccoli, even green beans) stir-fried quickly in olive oil with just a bit of garlic and a little salt. You may combine two or more vegetables if that'll work - carrots sliced very thinly on a very long diagonal will go with most green things, and make the dish more colorful. (Stir-fry the carrot slices first, over very high heat; if they brown very slightly, they'll taste sweeter. Then lower the heat a bit and throw in the green veg.)

Another possibility might be a roast chicken--they're marvelously easy to do, and depending on how you season them, their flavor profiles can vary a lot. If you throw some potatoes and perhaps some carrots in the pan with them, all you need to add is a salad for a complete meal.

I made dinner for my mom and her new boyfriend yesterday and they really liked it. It was chicken and veggies in a veloute sauce, over pasta. (Veloute is basically a cream sauce method, but use good white stock (veggie stock or chicken stock, usually) for the liquid. If you need more info, let me know, and I'll post a good recipe. I used Julia Child's for my basic method.)

I think all the suggestions above are really good.

If you're roasting a chicken, I might make mashed potatos and gravy though.
